A professional summary is the short paragraph at the top of your CV. In two to four sentences it tells the recruiter who you are, what you're good at and why you fit the role. Below you'll find a simple formula and 15 examples for different jobs and career stages.
Summary or objective: which should you use?
A summary focuses on what you offer — your experience, skills and results. An objective focuses on what you want. For most people a summary is stronger. An objective can still work for students, school leavers and career changers, as long as it also explains what you bring to the employer.
A simple formula for a strong summary
[Job title] with [years of experience] in [two or three key areas]. [One achievement with a number]. [What you're looking for or how you'll add value].
- Keep it to roughly 40–80 words.
- Use keywords from the job description.
- Include at least one measurable result.
- Avoid clichés like “hard-working team player” — show it with evidence instead.

How to tailor your summary for each application
- Copy two or three key requirements from the job advert.
- Rewrite your summary so it mentions those requirements, using the same words where they're true for you.
- Swap in the achievement that is most relevant to the role.
- Read it aloud. If it sounds generic, add a specific number, tool or result.
Common summary mistakes
- Writing in long paragraphs — keep it to four sentences at most.
- Using the same summary for every job.
- Listing personality traits without proof.
- Repeating your job history word for word instead of highlighting the best of it.
