A cover letter is a one-page letter you send with your CV. Your CV lists the facts; your cover letter explains why those facts make you right for this job at this company. A good one takes twenty minutes to write and can be the reason you are called for an interview.
In a hurry? The free cover letter maker writes a complete letter from a few answers. Read on to understand what goes into it.
Cover letter format at a glance
| Part | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Header | Your name, phone, email and city — the same as on your CV |
| Date and employer | The date, the hiring manager’s name, the company and its city |
| Greeting | “Dear Mr. Khan,” or “Dear Hiring Manager,” |
| Opening paragraph | The job you are applying for and why you are a strong match |
| Middle paragraph(s) | Two or three relevant skills with one real achievement |
| Closing paragraph | Why this company, your CV, and a request for an interview |
| Sign-off | “Yours sincerely,” and your name |
Length: one page, three or four short paragraphs, about 200–350 words.
How to write each part
1. Address it to a person
Look for the hiring manager’s name in the advert, on the company website or on LinkedIn. If you cannot find one, “Dear Hiring Manager,” is fine. Avoid “To whom it may concern”.
2. Open with the job and your strongest point
Say which job you are applying for, where you saw it, and give one line that makes the reader want to continue.
“I am writing to apply for the Accountant position advertised on Rozee.pk. With four years of experience in accounts payable and month-end closing for a PKR 1 billion trading company, I am confident I can contribute from day one.”
3. Prove it in the middle
Pick two or three requirements from the advert and show how you meet them. Include one achievement with a number. Do not copy your CV — explain the story behind its best line.
“In my current role I process more than 400 invoices a month and reconcile nine bank accounts. Last year I automated our reconciliations in Excel, which cut month-end closing from eight days to five.”
4. Say why you want this company
One specific sentence is enough: their growth, their products, their training, their reputation. It shows you did not send the same letter to fifty employers.
5. Close politely and ask for the interview
“My CV is attached for your review. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application at an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

Re: Application for Senior Accountant
Dear Ms. Noor,
I am writing to apply for the Senior Accountant position at Al Noor Trading LLC, as advertised on LinkedIn. With six years of experience in financial reporting and month-end closing for trading companies, I am confident that I can make a strong contribution to your finance team.
In my current role at Indus Trading Company I prepare monthly financial statements for a business with PKR 1.2 billion in annual revenue. I reduced our month-end closing from ten working days to five by automating fourteen reconciliations, and I recovered PKR 4.5 million in duplicate supplier payments. I am an ACCA member and an advanced user of SAP and Excel.
I am particularly interested in Al Noor Trading because of your expansion across the GCC, and I would welcome the challenge of supporting a multi-country finance function. I am ready to relocate and can join within one month of an offer.
My CV is attached for your review. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application at an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Hamza Sheikh

Re: Application for Trainee Officer – Operations
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to apply for the Trainee Officer position at SwiftLine Logistics, which I saw on your careers page. I recently completed my B.Com at Allama Iqbal Open University, and I am keen to start my career with a company known for developing young staff.
During my studies I built a solid foundation in accounting, business communication and MS Excel. I completed a three-month internship in which I entered more than 300 records a day with 99% accuracy, and I organised a university seminar for 200 students. I learn quickly, work carefully and enjoy being part of a team.
Although I am at the start of my career, I am ready to learn from experienced colleagues and take on responsibility from the first day.
My CV is attached for your review. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application at an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Hira Baig

How long should a cover letter be?
One page: three or four short paragraphs, around 200 to 350 words.
What is the difference between a CV and a cover letter?

How do I write a cover letter with no experience?
Focus on your education, projects, internships, volunteer work and transferable skills. Show enthusiasm for the company and a willingness to learn.
