What a good cover letter contains
| Part | What to write |
|---|---|
| Opening | The job you are applying for, where you saw it and one line on why you are a strong match. |
| Middle | Two or three skills the advert asks for, backed by one real achievement with a number. |
| Why them | One specific reason you want to work for this company, not just any company. |
| Close | Mention your attached CV, say you would welcome an interview and thank the reader. |
Keep the whole letter to one page — about 200 to 350 words. For a full walk-through with two complete examples, read how to write a cover letter.
Cover letter tips that get replies
- Write a new letter for every job. Change the company name, the job title and the skills you highlight.
- Do not repeat your CV. Pick the one or two facts that matter most for this job and explain them.
- Use the advert’s own words for skills and tools, where they are true for you.
- Be specific. “Handled 60 customer calls a day” is stronger than “good communication skills”.
- Check names and spelling twice. A wrong company name is the fastest way to be rejected.
- Send it as a PDF unless the employer asks for Word, and name the file clearly: Your-Name-Cover-Letter.pdf.
Send it with a CV that matches

Frequently asked questions
Is the cover letter maker free?
Yes. You can write, edit and download as many cover letters as you like, as PDF or Word, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Does it use AI to write my letter?
No. The letter is built from proven templates using the answers you type, so nothing is invented about you. You can edit every word before you download it.
How long should a cover letter be?
Keep it to one page: three or four short paragraphs, around 200–350 words. Recruiters read cover letters quickly.
Can my cover letter match my CV?
Yes. If you made your CV on this site, the letter picks up your name, contact details, colour, font and header style automatically so both documents look like a set.
Who should I address the letter to?
Use the hiring manager’s name if you can find it in the job advert, on LinkedIn or by calling the company. If not, “Dear Hiring Manager,” is perfectly acceptable.
Is my information saved or shared?
Your letter is saved only in your own browser so you can come back to it. Nothing is sent to our servers.
Do I need a cover letter for every job?
Send one whenever the advert asks for it or lets you attach one. A short, specific letter shows effort and lets you explain things a CV cannot, such as a career change or relocation.
