How to Find a Job in Saudi Arabia

9 min read Updated By Free CV Maker

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest employers of overseas workers in the world, with demand for everyone from drivers and technicians to nurses, engineers and IT specialists. Getting there is a process with clear steps — and knowing them protects you from wasted money and fake offers.

This guide explains where to find real jobs, how the work visa works and what to prepare. It is written with applicants from Pakistan in mind, but most of it applies wherever you are applying from.

Important: visa rules, fees and requirements change. Always confirm the current rules with official sources — the employer, the Saudi embassy or visa centre, and your own country’s overseas employment authority — before you pay for anything.

Step 1: Know which jobs are in demand

  • Construction and engineering: civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, site supervisors, surveyors, HSE officers.
  • Skilled trades: electricians, plumbers, welders, AC technicians, heavy equipment operators.
  • Driving and logistics: light and heavy drivers, warehouse and delivery staff.
  • Healthcare: nurses, doctors, lab and radiology technicians, pharmacists.
  • Hospitality and retail: hotel staff, cooks, waiters, cashiers, sales staff.
  • Office and technology: accountants, IT support, software developers, sales and admin staff.

Step 2: Prepare a Gulf-style CV

Saudi employers and recruitment agencies expect a few details that are left out of CVs elsewhere:

  • Nationality, date of birth and current location.
  • Passport validity and, if you are already in the Kingdom, your iqama status and whether it is transferable.
  • A professional photo — common and often expected.
  • Gulf experience and licences, such as a Saudi driving licence or professional registration.
  • Languages, including any Arabic.

Our guide to the CV format for Gulf jobs covers each point with an example. You can add the photo and these details in Free CV Maker and download your CV as PDF or Word.

Step 3: Apply through reliable channels

  • Job websites: LinkedIn, Bayt, Naukrigulf, GulfTalent and Indeed all list Saudi vacancies. Apply directly and keep your profile complete.
  • Company career pages: large Saudi employers and contractors advertise on their own websites. Applying there is the safest route.
  • Licensed recruitment agencies: in Pakistan these are called Overseas Employment Promoters (OEPs) and must hold a licence from the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE). Check the licence on the BEOE website before you deal with any agent.
  • Government channels: Pakistan’s Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC) recruits for foreign employers through official demand.
  • People you know: friends and relatives already working in the Kingdom often hear about vacancies first. Ask them to pass your CV to their HR department.

Step 4: Understand the work visa process

You cannot apply for a Saudi work visa by yourself. A Saudi employer must sponsor you. In outline, the process usually runs like this:

  1. Job offer and contract. The employer issues an offer and an employment contract. Read the salary, working hours, accommodation, leave and contract length carefully before you sign. Contracts are registered on the Saudi government’s Qiwa platform.
  2. Documents. You provide your passport, photographs, educational and experience certificates. Degrees and diplomas often need to be attested.
  3. Medical examination. You take a medical test at an approved centre in your country, booked through the official Wafid system used for Gulf countries.
  4. Skill or professional verification. Many trades must pass a skill test under Saudi Arabia’s Skill Verification Program, and professionals such as engineers and health workers go through their own accreditation or licensing checks.
  5. Visa stamping. The work visa is processed through the Saudi embassy or its authorised visa centre.
  6. Registration in your own country. Pakistani workers must register their contract with the Protector of Emigrants (BEOE) before travelling. Do not skip this step — it is a legal requirement and it gives you insurance and legal protection.
  7. Arrival and iqama. After you arrive, your employer arranges your residence permit (iqama), which you need for a bank account, a SIM card and almost everything else.

Step 5: Know who pays for what

Under Saudi labour rules, the employer is responsible for the cost of the work visa, the iqama, the work permit and their renewal. You may have to pay for your own documents, attestation, medical test and the official fees in your home country.

Ask for a written breakdown of every charge and a receipt for every payment. In Pakistan, the government sets a limit on what a licensed promoter may charge, so compare any demand with the official rate.

How to spot a fake job offer

  • The “agent” has no licence number, or the number does not match the official list.
  • You are asked to pay for a visa before you have seen a contract.
  • The offer comes from a free email address and the company has no real website or address.
  • The salary is far above the normal rate for the job.
  • You are told to travel on a visit or Umrah visa and “convert it later”. Working on those visas is illegal.
  • The agent wants to keep your original passport or documents without giving a receipt.

If something feels wrong, check with the BEOE or the nearest Protector of Emigrants office before you pay.

After you arrive

  • Keep a copy of your contract, passport and iqama, on paper and on your phone.
  • Your contract and salary records are held in government systems, and wages should be paid through a bank.
  • Recent labour reforms allow workers to change employers through Qiwa when certain conditions are met, without the old “no objection” letter. The conditions change, so check the current rules before you plan a move.
  • Keep your CV up to date. Each new project, licence and year of Gulf experience raises your value.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job in Saudi Arabia without an agent?

Yes. You can apply directly to employers through job websites and company career pages. If you receive a direct offer, you still need to complete the visa steps and register with your country’s overseas employment authority.

Who pays for the Saudi work visa?

Under Saudi labour rules the employer bears the cost of the work visa, iqama and work permit. You may pay for your own documents, medical test and official fees in your home country. Always ask for receipts.

What is an iqama?

The iqama is the Saudi residence permit issued to foreign workers after arrival. Your employer applies for it, and you need it for banking, renting, a SIM card and travel inside the Kingdom.

Can I work in Saudi Arabia on a visit visa?

No. Working on a visit, tourist or Umrah visa is illegal and can lead to fines, deportation and a ban. You need a work visa sponsored by an employer.
